The LDS Church Growth: Hong Kong Creates Two New Stakes

On June 5, 2016, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints held a Hong Kong multi-stake special conference (a special meeting for members across districts in HK), at which they announced the creation of two new stakes (church unit), by growing from four stakes to six stakes. This change was effective on the same day.

The two newly-created stakes are the Hong Kong China Lion Rock Stake and the Hong Kong China Kowloon East Stake. The six stakes are now organized as follows:

  1. Hong Kong China New Territories Stake
  2. Hong Kong China Tolo Harbour Stake
  3. Hong Kong China Kowloon West Stake
  4. Hong Kong China Kowloon East Stake
  5. Hong Kong China Lion Rock Stake
  6. Hong Kong Island China Stake

The conference was held in the Church’s chapel in Wanchai, and was broadcasted to chapels in Kowloon Tong, Ho Man Tin, Tai Po and Hung Shui Kiu via video conference. More than 2300 members witnessed the event.

The word “stake” is taken from the Old Testament in which the “tent,” or church, is held up by supporting stakes (see Isaiah 54:2).

Congregations of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are organized geographically and members attend worship services near their home. Each member belongs to a ward; each stake is comprised of five to 12 smaller congregations called wards or branches. A stake is similar to a Catholic diocese. The increase of stakes is a good indication of the growing strength of the Church.

“We really need to be able to convey to [members and non-members] that this is a global church,” said Elder Jeffrey R. Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. “We are [in different areas] to give, and to plant, and to build, and to see the Church grow by those local people, for those local people, in those local countries. We want to strengthen nations, and countries and people everywhere. Our own people are strengthened in the process. And in fact, [when] it strengthens our own people, it strengthens the nation.”

There are more than 24,000 Latter-day Saints in Hong Kong. They can be found at every level of society. They follow Jesus Christ, champion strong families and love serving local communities. To learn more about their beliefs and values, please click here
